A Portland woman stood out in baseball circles during the teen years of the 20th century. Florence "Smokey" Wood was a considerable talent who caught for the local team during pre-game practices, wowing onlookers with her fast throws. Yet she was too shy to play before a crowd. She later became a nun and principal of Cathedral Grammar School in Portland.
